What is happiness like ?
Happiness runs like an antelope
And leaps like a trout
It flits like a butterfly
Hums like a bumblebee
And rolls like the credit list
After a film
It smiles like a crocodile
Basking beside the Nile
And it eats through the earth
... like a worm
And then spreads itself round like a germ

The Unicorn
What do you expect when you enter the Unicorn in Llanidloes which is somewhere mid-Wales
Well - not a pub quiz for one thing and somebody doing I Ching
With yarrow sticks. This is an owl and a live one that’s perched in the corner
Surveying the bar room for mice - and maybe pork scratchings
It was raining outside - and when I say raining I mean that it deluged
And the rail line was flooded - the replacement bus had only got through
As the driver had sped though a water filled road in his haste to get home
And not to be stranded all night with a bus full of travellers
Anxious to get home to children and work in the morning
If the sun ever rose. Meanwhile in the Unicorn ... ( to be continued )
Buttons
I left a button in a village - I’d noticed it was hanging by a thread
I found a button in the hayshed - fancier than anyone’s round here
And left before the sun was up. I’d travelled half a mile before I’d noticed it was gone
I can see that someone slept here - there's a hollow in the hay
I can’t go back and look for it - I need to keep on going on the run
I should tell the constable - but I didn't and by now he must be twenty miles away

Rain
Yes - rain
And rain and rain again
The way it gets tipped out of clouds
Is magic- how did it get so far up there ?
A mile high up above the ground
And in such quantities that it can bucket down
I love the way it’s quiet at first
And small things shelter under leaves
And humans huddle under awnings
And talk to strangers while the rain
Is streaking down and bouncing off
The road as if it was a trampoline
With little dances in the light
Then all the droplets gather up
Becoming one big shining sheet
And makes the road a glassy river
then an overflowing burble in the drain
blocked up with stuff that's washed down by the rain

The Collector
I want to be an uncollector
Clear the world around me - wipe too many meanings from too many things
Then swing cats around, do ballet exercises in the spaces and make room for any weird surprises that tomorrow brings
